Advanced Directive Gathering

Sunday, March 25, 2018
3:00 - 5:00pm PST
at Nalanda West

Spring is here! What better way to engage in some "personal spring cleaning" by taking stock of our life, preparing for our death, and ensuring all our affairs are in order.  Once again, we take a break from our usual monthly Death Cafe process at Nalanda West to consider the art of living while dying.

Please join me at on Sunday, March 25, 2023 for an afternoon of reflection and discussion about end-of-life care planning and advanced directives. You will receive a copy of the Five Wishes and be guided through various questions regarding who you would like to make medical decision for you when you are unable, what types of medical interventions you want, how comfortable do you want to be, and what do you want your loved ones to know when you are gone.

Conversations About Climate

Wednesday, September 27th, 2023
6:00 - 7:30pm Pacific Time

If we can’t even talk about climate change, we certainly will never be able to fix it. Dr. James McClintock Professor of Polar Marine Biology; University of Alabama at Birmingham

For years I have facilitated numerous death cafes around the greater Seattle area as well as virtually. Despite the fact that we all know the inevitability of what awaits us - our death and the death of everyone and everything we cherish - acknowledging this reality, let alone discussing or planning for what is to come, is challenging for many. By avoiding such conversations, we empower our fears, and possibly act in ways that increase suffering. As I am fond of quoting, You can talk about sex without getting pregnant, so, too, you can talk about death with out dying (at least, immediately). Death cafes offer participants the space to give voice to the myriad of thoughts and feelings surrounding their experience of death, and to provide an opportunity to  recognize they are not alone in their concerns by connecting with others.

Another topic that most Americans believe is inevitable, yet remain reluctant and fearful to talk about is climate change. According to the Yale Center for Climate Communications, over 70% of US citizens admit that climate change is happening and 60% are somewhat concerned, yet most (67%) say they rarely to never voice their concerns about the climate crisis to anyone. Similar to the death cafes, the goal of these conversations is come up with solutions to alter the potential outcomes, but rather to learn how to befriend our feelings, witness and honor our sadness, fear, anger and rage, to connect with others, and in the midst of all the loss and death, continue to live and breathe in the world.

This is a free, online, participant-directed conversation rather than an educational workshop. Participants are invited to show up with an open heart and open ears, willing to be present to themselves and others, to listen respectfully, engage mindfully, and honor what arises in themselves and the group.

Breathing Your Way to Acceptance & Compassion

Saturday & Sunday
September 9th & 10th, 2017
9:00 - 4:00pm PST
at Mind-Body Sanctuary

$125 per person / $175 per couple

Feeling stuck?

  • Do you feel stuck, and unable to move forward with your life, no matter how much you try?

  • Do you experience irritation, aggravation and frustration in situations, others or yourself and you are unsure why?

  • Do find yourself ruminating about life events over and over again, unable to let go and find peace?

Holding on to the past is a lot of work and demands a great deal of our life energy. Holding on to the past prevents us from living fully in the present moment, and blocks our expressions of joy and gratitude. We are resistant to compassion and acceptance when we fear that if we do we will loose our drive, forget what has happened, or excuse other’s behaviors. Yet, compassion and acceptance neither condemns or condones. Compassion and acceptance focuses on making peace with our past so we can move on with living. Though simple in process, compassion and acceptance are far from easy, and requires commitment and practice.

Breathing Your Way to Compassion & Acceptance is a two- day journey into the process of letting go of the past, and focusing on how we wish to live our lives. Combining the art and wisdom of breathwork, meditation, biofeedback and compassion & acceptance practices, participants will learn about the following concepts and practices:

  • Rudimentary introduction to the nervous system and how early experiences hardwire us to either hold on to the past or to accept and move forward

  • Basic biomechanical, biochemical, neurological and psychological factors of breathing, how breathing postures and patterns can influence the heart and balances the nervous system

  • Functional versus dysfunctional breathing patterns

  • Basic steps to compassion and acceptance and how to blame less and take life events less personally

  • Compassion and acceptance practices to increase resiliency and freedom
