MONTHLY MIND-BODY / BIOFEEDBACK MENTORSHIP MEETINGS

These monthly, virtual gatherings are for students and practitioners who are learning or already incorporating contemplative, mind-body and biofeedback practices into their work. Each month we gather to discuss cases and questions regarding all things mind-body and biofeedback. Meetings are free and will be held over Zoom. COURSE DESCRIPTION

This self-directed, learn-at-your-own-pace, online training course provides the basic introductory education in biofeedback history, theory, and clinical applications. A variety of modalities / instrumentation are explored, such as electromyography (EMG), electrodermal activity (EDA), thermal biofeedback, respiration biofeedback, and heart rate variability. Several adjunctive, mind-body interventions will be introduced, such as mindfulness / meditation training, progressive muscles relaxation, breathwork, autogenic training, and guided imagery / visualization.

Participants receive lifetime access to this course, which includes video lectures and posted articles on course website, as well as suggested readings in texts. While a few of the areas do not have associated video lectures, assigned readings are provided to provide the required information. Each section concludes with a brief quiz to test your knowledge and identify areas for further review and investigation. Enrollment includes ongoing access to Professional Biofeedback Certification Community discussion forum where participants can pose questions to instructor and colleagues.

  • By the conclusion of this course, each participant will be able to:

    • Define and explain the foundations and history of mind-body medicine & biofeedback.

    • Describe learning theories applicable to biofeedback.

    • Provide biological, neurological and psychological rationale for the use and benefit of mind-body medicine & biofeedback, and explain the stress response.

    • Describe each of the various biofeedback modalities covered throughout the course, including:

    • electrodermal activity (EDA) - skin conductance (SC)

      1. surface electromyography (sEMG)

      2. temperature and thermal biofeedback

      3. respiration biofeedback and respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA)

      4. peripheral blood flow (BVP)

    • Understand the technology involved in operating biofeedback equipment, including learning how to record and interpret data, identify artifact and determining appropriate recording.

    • Know the proper attach of electrodes, sensors and equipment.

    • Formulate rationale and plan for biofeedback for various conditions.

    • Perform psychophysiological profile and pre- and post- data comparison.

    • Critically evaluate the literature pertaining to mind-body medicine & biofeedback for clinical and education applications.

    • Describe each of the adjunctive mind-body therapeutic techniques used in concert with biofeedback, such as mindfulness and meditation training, progressive muscle relaxation, quieting reflex, breathwork, autogenic training, guided imagery and heart-centered meditation/loving-kindness meditation.

Course Description:

Heart rate variability, or HRV, is gaining a great deal of attention lately as more and more people, from athletes to meditators to biohackers, are tracking it. With so many apps and wearable devices monitoring all of our biometrics, having a better understanding of HRV and the numerous ways to measure, assess and influence it can help practitioners not only speak to patients, but also provide a foundational method for restoring balance and improving the quality of their lives.

HRV has been assessed for decades, and as researchers and cardiologists can attest, it is a useful indicator of overall health, including mortality and morbidity across numerous diseases. In this workshop, you will first learn precisely what is meant by HRV and how it is measured. Then you be introduced to HRV biofeedback - a simple, noninvasive method of self-regulation that combines breathing, focused attention and heart rate monitoring to strengthen vagal tone and improve overall psycho-physiological health.

Regardless of degree or specialty, understanding HRV can be a useful tool in any clinical practice.

As a participant, you will have access to numerous online videos, allowing you to review the material after completion of the workshop.

What you will learn from this workshop:

  • Define heart rate variability.

  • Articulate the importance and significance of HRV values on physical, mental and emotional health, and describe the relationship between HRV and health.

  • List the factors that influence and impact HRV.

  • Compare and contrast the different types of instrumentation used to measure HRV, as well as describe what instrumentation varies wearables use.

  • Understand the basics of HRV measurements (time-domain, frequency domain, nonlinear readings, HRmax - HRmin); and reasons for their use.

  • Learn how to analyze HRV measurements.

  • Outline  ways to incorporate HRV measurement into clinical practice.

HRV for Training, Health and Optimal Performance - Free Video Series

This video series is for anyone interested in learning more about heart rate variability (HRV) basics as well as several of the HRV apps and wearables on the market right now. Keep in mind that the app and wearable field is continually changing, growing and expanding. HRV measurement is a cost-effective and non-invasive measurement that provides insight into the functioning of the autonomic nervous system. Through monitoring, you can obtain more information about the rhythm, and hence parasympathetic influences, on the heart, which tells you more than a static, 30 second to 1 minute reading of heart rate provides. For athletes, consistently monitoring HRV can give an indication of recovery and training level, since a decrease in HRV indicates a drop in PNS activity, and suggests less recovery or potential illness. The first video (35-minutes) in the series provides a brief overview defining HRV, its applications, factors that influence HRV, the types of instruments to measure it and specific measurement methods. In the second video (25-minutes) in the HRV for Training series, the parameters for tracking and monitoring HRV will be covered. The importance of establishing a baseline and coefficient of variation are discussed, and consistent practices for measurement, such time of day, posture, breathing patterns, and more are reviewed. The third video (51 minutes) reviews some of the apps on the market, and is already outdated as many apps have been updated and improved. However this might give you an idea as to the general of how to use them The final 27-minute video in the series provides an easy way to use one of the discussed apps (EliteHRV) to help determine resonance frequency (RF), which is the ideal breathing rate that yields maximum HRV parameters.
